At least 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 security personnel entered the area on Tuesday early hours. The Red Command reacted using armed resistance, burning barricades and dropping bombs from drones, authorities confirmed.

The UN Human Rights Office said it was "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is regarded as the headquarters of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

Government representatives said no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Resident Accounts

Community members have described the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Roads remain closed throughout the region.

Gang Growth

The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and control of the hillside favelas.

Security forces said more than 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were confiscated in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The joint operation by civil and military police comes after a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.

Wider Perspective

Large-scale police operations are not uncommon in the South American nation prior to major international events in the nation.

The UN climate summit COP30 is taking place in the northern urban center in the eleventh month.
